51 FIESTA DE LA BULERÍA DE JEREZ (51ST BULERÍA FESTIVAL OF JEREZ)

51 FIESTA DE LA BULERÍA DE JEREZ (51ST BULERÍA FESTIVAL OF JEREZ)

The City Council of Jerez de la Frontera, celebrates during this week from 20 to 25 August 2018, the Fiesta de la Bulería, a flamenco event of song and dance, which has traditionally been organized every September, within the Fiestas de la Vendimia. This year it celebrates its 51st anniversary. In addition to the three scheduled shows, there will be numerous activities related to bulería, such as: courses, workshops and flashmob, as well as a souk with flamenco crafts.

The Fiesta de la Bulería has established itself as one of the most important events on the national and international flamenco scene. Every year it continues to promote flamenco as one of the characteristic signs of identity of Jerez, making it attractive and accessible to flamenco lovers and connoisseurs, but not forgetting the general public.

Over the years, it has been held in various venues in the city: the Cine Terraza Tempul, the Teatro Eslava, the Plaza de Toros and the Alcázar. In the 2016 edition, a new three-day format was chosen for the Alameda Vieja, an exceptional venue that has become the ideal setting for this festival. The start time each day will be from 22:00 hours.

Saturday 25 August:

JEREZ BULERIA FESTIVAL dedicated to MANUEL MONEO

Musical Direction, Artistic, staging of this day has been entrusted to MANUELA CARPIO.
To Manuel Moneo. To that cantaor who has marked part of the history of the recent cante of Jerez. To this 'Bronze of the Plazuela' who has been able to enhance the 'jondo' culture since he came into the world and put the district of San Miguel in the highest place of flamenco. Jerez sings to Manuel Moneo', it must do so with full integrity. From there, from that suburb where Manuel Torres, Don Antonio Chacón, La Paquera or Agujetas were born, this thoroughbred gypsy has been able to express the sonorous nuances of the gypsy discourse. After his death, although in his lifetime he was already valued as one of the essential for the aficionados, it is only fair to publicly recognise, once again, his extensive and profound contribution. The cante of Jerez must pay tribute to him, which is why the great exponents of the present day want to show the admiration and affection they continue to profess for the patriarch of the Moneo family. His son Barullo, heir to the greatness of his saga and considered to be the great connoisseur of the figure of Manuel Moneo, will be present to commemorate the nights of glory of this much-missed cantaor. It should be noted that his presence is something to celebrate, as he is sure to be the star of an emotionally charged moment. Luis Moneo, Manuel's brother, who is taking up the baton from his brothers and taking responsibility for an honourable surname, could not be absent either. Jesús Méndez, the youngest of the jewels of La Plazuela will be present, and from Santiago will come the gypsy voices of Tomasa 'La Macanita and Luis 'El Zambo'. Jerez, in its splendour. The guitars of Diego del Morao, Manuel Valencia, Juan Manuel Moneo and Miguel Salado will join the Fiesta. And Manuela Carpio will be there to provide, along with her group, the rhythm of the dance. But she, always generous with her people, will not be alone, she will be accompanied by Enrique 'El Extremeño', Juan José Amador and Miguel Lavi, among others. It is her wish, as artistic director, to open the doors to other colleagues from cities such as Seville or Morón, because in those places Moneo was, and will be, also loved. Carmen Ledesma, Pepe Torres, Luis Peña, El Torombo, Diego de la Margara, Fernando Soto and El Bó, do not want to miss the big night of art in Jerez. A people of 24 carats. The weeping for the loss of Manuel will be mixed with the joy of a whole town, in rhythm, that enjoys remembering one of the most famous singers of Jerez.
