NIÑO RUBÉN, CREATOR OF THE FLAMENCO BASSOON WORLDWIDE.

Currently, Niño Rubén is the creator and sole representative of the Flamenco Bassoon worldwide, internationally recognised as one of the most transgressive artists of today.

Rubén Jiménez Urbano was born in Seville on 25 March 1997, but has spent most of his life in the Cordovan towns of Lucena and Doña Mencía. He is known artistically as Niño Rubén, bassoon soloist, producer, composer and researcher, dedicated to flamenco and contemporary music.

At the age of 13, he debuted as a soloist and began to compose his first pieces on his own. Later, during his youth, he combined both facets with the world of flamenco, naturally developing a new sound universe unprecedented in the history of music. He stood out in various recitals and competitions related to the classical world, from which he gradually moved away.

In 2014 he was awarded the Special Jury Prize at the 1st Double Reed Association of Seville Competition, awarded for his "outstanding performance and musical talent".

He began his musical apprenticeship at the age of 9 at the Professional Conservatory of Music in Lucena, where he finished as one of the winners of the Germán Romero Bellido Prize, with one of the best records of his class. During this decade he learnt with numerous instrumental chamber ensembles and orchestras all over Spain, and also began to develop his compositional facet. He then began the Degree in Music Performance at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Navarra, where he graduated with honours in 2016. In this year the American publishing house TrevCo Music Publishing, one of the most important dedicated to double reed instruments, publishes his work as "something totally different, original and challenging".At the end of the year, he bids farewell to everything orthodox after being a finalist in the Concurso Nacional Virtuosos de Radio Televisión Española. In the words of the performer himself, the main objective that his music will always pursue is absolute freedom.

From a very early age he began to sketch his first compositions, instinctively searching for the completely unexplored. Both the lyrics and the music of all of them are mainly influenced by the culture and music of his homeland, Andalusia. It includes transcriptions, melodies derived from folklore and rhythms from flamenco music. In 2013 he presents an intimate Romanza sin Palabras which ends after the death of his "Angel del cielo".

In 2014 his pieces Pasión según San Lucas and Adagio & Burlesque were premiered in Doña Mencía and Lucena respectively.During this year he won a grant from the European Community to travel to Turkey and study its traditional music as a member of the programme Music, Universal Symbol in Communication. In this way, he began to broaden his discourse through other world music, and also became interested in the aesthetics of contemporary music. The piece Andante Appassionato & Ocho Variaciones, composed in 2015, is proposed the following year for the prestigious Fernand Gillet-Hugo Fox International Competition.

In 2016 he premiered his work Rustiques, commissioned by bassoonist José Lozano, soloist of the Symphony Orchestra of Navarre, at the Otieza Museum in Navarre.

On 2 June 2017, Al Toque del Fagot Flamenco was published, a work in which Niño Rubén presents a new playing technique for his instrument - developed by him - in order to incorporate it into the art of flamenco. Trevco Music Publishing awarded him the distinction of "Creator of the Flamenco Bassoon". For the first time in history, this instrument was given the 'jondura' of this art form. This unique sonority is not heard until a month later, on 2 July 2017 at the Castillo de Doña Mencía, in an intimate show in homage to Camarón de la Isla. Its particular sound is a pleasant surprise for all the audience, making this instrument the protagonist as it has rarely been. A few days later he received one of the Cruzcampo Foundation's awards, which is committed to the Talent of the South. This recognition allows him to collaborate in the symphonic shows of the flamenco singer José Mercé.

At the end of this year, the young researcher began his second academic career, on this occasion a degree in Flamencology at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Córdoba, with the aim of specialising in the composition and production of this genre. Since then he has been exclusively self-publishing all his flamenco music scores on the lulu.com platform.

In 2018 he participates in the presentation of the show Horizontes by the flamenco pianist DORANTES. This year he culminates the presentation of the flamenco bassoon in Granada, within the XLVII Congress of the International Double Reed Society. The bassoonists and oboists from all over the world who attend his recital send him off with great acclaim and the international critics place him as one of the most innovative bassoonists to date, making him the ambassador and maximum representative of Andalusian music and culture. The magazine Reeding Matter, of the Australasian Double Reed Society, highlights his recital as one of the most representative of these conferences. This debut is recorded for the short film El Nacimiento del Fagot Flamenco, recorded in the Peña Flamenca de Lucena, the third oldest in the world, with the collaboration of the guitarist Luis Calderito. This documentary summarises the creative conception of the artist and the making of this original premiere. This is the first audiovisual to be shared publicly, as during the following years the young musician made sure that his innovation would not have been heard by the audience. In this way, "the young musician from Cordoba places this wind instrument at the forefront of flamenco".

In 2019, during the LIX Festival Internacional del Cante de las Minas de La Unión, the preview of his first album, La Cahiya de mî Çueñô, an autobiography that questions the limits of flamenco by fully exploiting the resources of the bassoon, will take place in the Catedral del Cante. This year he closes the IV Festival Flamenco Alquería de Bormujos with a special performance after the participation of the cantaora Esperanza Fernández.

The vocation for teaching also exists from a very early age in Niño Rubén's professional career. His passion for music is brought to children and young people through various educational workshops. In April 2014 he founded the Ensemble Trémolo, with whom he produced his first album. At the age of nineteen he is a professor of harmony and composition at the UNIVERSITY OF GRANADA, thanks to the educational support programme of the Young Association of Musicology. This year he begins his master classes under the title Saca el Cien por Cien de Ti.
