THE FLAMINGO, REVIVING THE CORONAVIRUS

THE FLAMINGO, REVIVING THE CORONAVIRUS

THE FLAMINGO, REVIVING THE CORONAVIRUS.

The flamenco sector has been greatly affected by COVID-19 since the state of alarm was initiated by the Spanish government on 14 March 2020. A pandemic so brutal that little by little it has been taking its toll on the businesses dependent on the flamenco sector, culture, tourism, etc. ....

Suspension of all types of performances and shows in theatres, auditoriums, concert halls, tablaos flamencos, flamenco clubs, leisure and tourism venues, and an endless number of small, medium and large events related to the art of flamenco.

A very broad sector that includes artists, musicians, sound and lighting companies, production companies, video and photography, props, flamenco fashion, tailoring, make-up and hairdressing, painting and sculpture, museums, tourism, communication, and a very long etc. ....

Flamenco is an art form with its own character, tradition, language and its own rules, in its different facets of singing, guitar playing and dancing. Thanks to the great work of many flamenco artists, it has become popular and has crossed borders. That is why it is of great cultural and touristic importance in our country, and it needs the support of all the public administrations so that all the good work that has been carried out up to now can continue.

On 16 November 2010, UNESCO declared flamenco art as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

There are many festivals, competitions and important events, both public and private, that take place in Spain throughout the year, so that this art continues to live in all its splendour, in each and every one of its popular and traditional festivals.

During the months of confinement, many artists have dedicated their time to exhibit their art through their social networks (facebook, instagram, youtube, etc.) and connect with their public, and also to make the situation they were living through more bearable.

Flamenco has also reached the virtual world, with the creation of new online events, albeit small in format, but which have gradually adapted and brought pure flamenco and flamenco aficción jondo closer to the public. In addition, different online training courses have been carried out in conservatories, academies and in private format.

We would like to highlight the movement that is being carried out through different groups and associations, with the main objective of dignifying the professionalism of flamenco artists: grants, contracts, social security, professional category. An artistic sector that demands its labour and fiscal rights as professionals who dedicate their time and effort so that it is deservedly recognised.

Today, 25th June 2020, although we are in a process of new normality, the flamenco sector has been left very helpless and with a lot of uncertainty. Although some cities such as Cordoba, Seville, Jerez, Granada, Madrid, etc. are already starting their flamenco activity with the recommended security measures, we insist on the need for the support of each and every one of the Public Administrations: city councils, regional governments, autonomous governments, national government, as well as numerous groups that work for and with Flamenco such as foundations, flamenco clubs, associations, etc.

Although nothing will ever be the same as before, but from Argot Flamenco we show all our support and encouragement to the whole sector, hoping that in the near future conditions will improve and we will continue on our best path.

In short, flamenco is an art,

a self-expression, recognised and admired all over the world.
